CIVIL ENGINEERING
Overview
Hannes has around 30 years of experience in the built environment. That experience includes general building construction, some civil construction, and approximately 15 years of civil engineering design experience. While employed in a large global engineering company, he was part of design teams on several international multi-million dollar engineering projects. Since 2022, he has been a freelance civil design consultant on residential, municipal, commercial, and industrial developments.
The following is a summary of Hannes’s civil engineering design experience:
Civil Engineering Design Consultant, 2022- Present
Detail design of civil services and investigation reports on various projects, including:
- Upmarket rural housing development – engineered roads and civil services
- Civil services design for several commercial and industrial developments
- Airstrip geometric design
- Intersection upgrades
- Stormwater investigation reports
- Technical services development reports
Civil Engineering Designer in an International Engineering Firm in South Africa, 2014-2022
Mine in Guinea, Africa, 2021-2022 – (Pre-Feasibility Study) The project was a pre-feasibility study for a new iron ore mine. Hannes was responsible for the design and costing of civil infrastructure, overseeing a small team of junior engineers, and reviewing designs. Additionally, he designed earthworks terraces for three different accommodation camps and the layout of the permanent camp, housing 4000 people. He also designed the gravity sewer reticulation, pressurized reticulation networks, and rising main pipes.
Green Steel Manufacturing Plant, Sweden, 2021 – (Pre-Feasibility Study) (Multi-Million Dollar Project) The project consisted of a large-scale, fossil-free steel plant, with an output of 5 million tons of green steel per annum. Hannes was the Civil Lead on the project, leading a small team of junior engineers. The team designed the 11 km onsite roads, stormwater, and sewer reticulation. Additionally, he designed the terrace for the plant, which consisted of the moving 6 million cubic meters of earth.
Metals Plant in the United Emirates, 2021 – (Feasibility Study) The project consisted of a process plant using new Technology. Hannes was responsible for designing the terrace, roads, and stormwater around the process building and the connection to the existing infrastructure.
Liquid Natural Gas Development, Mozambique, 2019-2020 – The project consisted of the complete detail design of a 9500-person camp. Hannes was the Civil Lead on the project, leading a team of more than 20 engineers and draughters. He was responsible for coordinating the team and tracking progress, reviewing designs/drawings, and compiling bills of quantities. The civil portion of the works included roads and stormwater, gravity, and pressurized water networks. He also designed the camp layout, some of the roads, and the terraces that covered an area of 80 ha. Hannes received a Company Leadership Award for work done on this project.
Iron Ore Mine in Canada, 2017-2018 – (Detail design) The project is in the Arctic Circle in the northern areas of Canada. The project consists of the detailed design of the mine infrastructure. Hannes was responsible for the design of stormwater, terraces, and roads. The stormwater design included the complete process from catchment delineation to channel and sedimentation pond design. The road design included the geometric design of access and haul road design and Self-Propelled Modular Transport (SPMT) roads. The terrace designs comprised of general laydown and stockpile areas.
Local Mines, South Africa, 2016 – (Detail Design) The project involved detailed design of various infrastructure upgrades. Hannes was responsible for the geometric design of the access road towards the mine.
Various Commercial Civil Projects 2015-2022 – (Detail Design) These projects were all commercial developments and included Hankey Police Station, Humansdorp Magistrates Court, Humerail Office Park and Dynamic Commodities factory extension in Port Elizbeth. Hannes was responsible for the civil infrastructure design, including terraces, roads, stormwater, sewer, and potable water.
Stormwater Master Plan, 2014 – (Master Plan Study) The study was done on six towns in the Eastern Cape in South Africa, including Jeffreys Bay. Hannes was responsible for capturing and creating 3d models from all the existing stormwater infrastructure in these towns, assessing the areas prone to flooding, and finding solutions to prevent flooding. He also generated GIS information for all the existing stormwater infrastructure and produced an extensive Stormwater Master Plan Report of more than 300 pages.
Note:
During this period, Hannes was identified as a Civil 3d Superuser in the company. He was responsible for assisting draughters and engineers with their Civil 3d queries as well as setting up CAD templates for the company.
Freelance Draughtsperson in South Africa, 2012-2014
During this time, Hannes provided his draughting services to several civil engineering and architectural consultants. His responsibilities included setting up structural Revit models and general structural draughting and rebar detailing.
Freelance Training and Education, South Africa, 2011-Present
Since 2011 Hannes has been contracted as a part-time lecturer at the local University in Port Elizabeth. Between 2011 and 2014, he presented three subjects for the Civil Engineering department, and since 2015 he has presented Basic Surveying in the Construction Management Department.
Hannes also developed several online training courses in engineering software and as well as some technical development courses.
Civil Construction, South Africa, 2007-2008
During this period, Hannes was responsible, mainly for the civil construction of two different townhouse developments. His responsibilities included setting out building and civil works, constructing concrete parking areas, and sewer and potable water reticulation networks. He was also utilized as the plumber on the project and installed plumbing in one of the townhouse developments.
